Steel Procurement Checklist: What Every Buyer Should Know

A steel procurement checklist helps you buy the right reinforcement bars at a fair price, on time, and without nasty surprises. Buying steel is not just about the lowest price per ton. It is also about the correct grade and sizes, reliable quality and a supplier who delivers when you need the steel. Use the ten steps below for any project, from a single house to a large building.

1. Define the Specification

First, get the requirements from your structural drawings and bar schedule: grade (usually Grade 60), bar sizes, lengths, total quantity and the standard, such as ASTM A615. Never change the grade or sizes without your engineer’s approval.

2. Estimate the Quantity

3. Choose a Reliable Supplier

4. Ask for Documents

Request the mill test certificate for each batch, and copies of any certifications the supplier claims. See steel certifications explained.

5. Compare Quotes Properly

Put every quote on the same basis: same grade and brand, price per ton, with transport shown separately. Also, confirm how long the price is valid.

6. Plan Deliveries

Agree delivery dates for each stage of work. Staged deliveries reduce rust and theft on site and spread the cost. Likewise, confirm that trucks can reach your site.

7. Inspect Every Delivery

Check the brand and grade marks rolled onto the bars.
Check sizes and count against the invoice.

8. Test When Required
