1. Standard and grade: the bars should be made to a recognised standard, such as ASTM A615, in the grade your drawings specify.
2. Mill test certificate: a genuine manufacturer can give you test results for the batch you buy.
3. Correct weight: a bar’s weight in kg per metre should be close to d²/162, where d is the diameter in mm. Underweight bars mean you are paying for steel you did not get.
4. Rolled-in marks: branded bars carry the manufacturer’s marks. Unmarked bars are hard to trace.
5. Size range: check that the supplier stocks every size in your bar schedule, so you do not mix brands.
6. Clear pricing: ask for the price per ton and the transport cost separately, in writing.
7. Delivery and support: confirm delivery dates and who to call if there is a problem on site.
