Steel myths spread quickly on construction sites and in markets across Pakistan. Some cost builders money, while others put buildings at risk. Here are the most common myths about steel bars (saria), and the facts behind them.
Myth 1: All steel bars are the same
Fact: Bars differ in grade, strength, ductility, weight and quality control. Two bars of the same size can behave very differently under load. Always buy the grade your drawings specify, from a manufacturer that tests its steel. See different grades of steel bars.
Myth 2: Imported steel is always better than local steel
Fact: Quality depends on the mill and the testing, not the country. Good local bars made to ASTM A615 meet the same minimum strengths as imported bars of the same grade. Read why local steel manufacturing matters.
Myth 3: Cheaper steel is just as good
Fact: Very cheap bars are often underweight, untested or made from poorly controlled scrap. As a result, you may pay less per ton but get less steel and less strength. Compare prices only for the same grade, brand and weight. See avoiding fake and substandard steel.
Myth 4: The most expensive steel is always the best
Fact: Price alone proves nothing. Instead, check the grade marks, the mill test certificate and the weight.
Myth 5: Recycled steel is weak
Fact: Steel keeps its properties when recycled properly. Most rebar in Pakistan is made from scrap, and a correctly made Grade 60 bar meets Grade 60 strength regardless of its source. Read about steel recycling.
Myth 6: Any rust means the bar is useless
Fact: Light, tight surface rust is normal and does not reduce strength. However, loose flaky rust must be brushed off, and bars with deep pitting should be rejected.
Myth 7: TMT bars never rust
Fact: TMT bars are stronger and more ductile, but they are ordinary carbon steel and will rust if exposed. Concrete cover and proper storage protect them.
Myth 8: More steel is always safer
Fact: Extra bars in the wrong place can crowd the formwork, cause poor concrete compaction and waste money. Safety comes from the right steel in the right place, as designed by an engineer.
Myth 9: Grade 40 is fine for any house
Fact: Most modern house designs in Pakistan use Grade 60, especially in earthquake zones. Use Grade 40 only where your engineer allows it. See Grade 40 vs Grade 60 steel.
Myth 10: Weight doesn’t matter if the size is right
Fact: Weight shows how much steel is really in the bar. A bar that looks like 12 mm but weighs much less than 0.889 kg per metre is undersized. See how to calculate the weight of steel bars.
