Every brand says its saria is the best. But the best steel bars in Pakistan are not a brand name on a banner. They are bars that meet the grade in your drawings, weigh what they should, carry clear marks and come with test results. This guide gives you eight simple checks to tell good steel bars from bad ones before they go into your house or project.

What Makes Steel Bars “Best” for Construction?
Steel bars (also called saria, sariya, rebar or TR bars) carry the tension inside reinforced concrete. Once the concrete is poured, they cannot be checked or replaced. The best steel bars are therefore the ones that are:
- Strong enough: they reach the minimum yield strength of their grade.
- Ductile: they bend without cracking, which matters in earthquakes.
- Full weight: their weight per metre matches their diameter.
- Well bonded: their ribs grip the concrete properly.
- Traceable: you know which mill made them and can see their test results.
8 Checks Before You Buy Steel Bars in Pakistan
1. Buy the grade your engineer specifies
Most houses and buildings in Pakistan use Grade 60 deformed bars (minimum yield strength 420 MPa); Grade 40 (280 MPa) is for light work only where the design allows. Never swap grades to save money. See Grade 40 vs Grade 60 steel.
2. Check the standard
Ask which standard the bars are made to. In Pakistan, deformed bars are usually made to ASTM A615. A supplier who cannot answer this question is a warning sign.
3. Weigh a few bars
A round bar’s weight in kg per metre is close to D² ÷ 162, where D is the diameter in mm. A 12 mm bar, for example, should weigh about 0.89 kg per metre. Underweight bars mean less steel than you paid for. Use our guide to calculating the weight of steel bars.
4. Look for rolled-in marks
Branded bars carry the maker’s mark and grade rolled onto the bar. Unmarked bars are hard to trace if something goes wrong. Learn how to identify steel bars.
5. Ask for the mill test certificate
A genuine manufacturer can give you the test results (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, bend test) for the batch you buy. On larger jobs, send samples to a lab yourself. See our guide to testing steel bar quality.
6. Inspect the surface
Ribs should be even and clearly formed along the whole bar. Reject bars with cracks, flaking, deep rust pits or uneven ribs. A thin layer of light surface rust is normal; loose, flaking rust is not.
7. Be careful with prices far below the market
If a quote is much lower than the official rates of established mills, ask why. Very cheap saria is often underweight, re-rolled from poor scrap, or not the grade claimed. Compare with the steel rate in Pakistan today.
8. Buy from the manufacturer or an authorised dealer
Buying direct, or from a dealer the mill has authorised, gives you a clear source, the right paperwork and someone accountable for quality. Our checklist on avoiding fake and substandard steel covers the common tricks.
Best Steel Bars for House Construction
For a typical RCC house in Pakistan, Grade 60 deformed bars are the standard choice for columns, beams and slabs, in the sizes shown on your structural drawings. Plan the quantity first: a house needs roughly 3.5 to 4 kg of steel per square foot of covered area. See how much steel a 5, 7 or 10 marla house needs, and read more about types of steel bars and which suits your building.
Quick Comparison: Good vs Poor Steel Bars
| Check | Good steel bars | Poor steel bars |
|---|---|---|
| Grade and standard | Stated clearly (e.g. Grade 60, ASTM A615) | Vague or missing |
| Weight per metre | Close to D² ÷ 162 | Noticeably lighter |
| Marks | Maker’s mark and grade rolled in | No marks |
| Test certificate | Available for the batch | Not available |
| Surface | Even ribs, no cracks | Uneven ribs, cracks, flaking rust |
| Price | In line with official mill rates | Far below the market |
Steel Bars from Kamran Steel
Kamran Steel has manufactured deformed steel bars in Lahore since 1984, in a fully automated rolling mill on Sheikhupura Road. We supply Grade 40 and Grade 60 bars to ASTM A615 at one rate for every city, directly and through dealers in more than 20 cities. Today’s official rate is Rs 277 per kg for Grade 60 and Rs 275 per kg for Grade 40; transport is charged separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which steel bars are best in Pakistan?
The best steel bars are the ones that meet the grade in your drawings (usually Grade 60 to ASTM A615), weigh the correct amount per metre, carry the maker’s marks and come with a mill test certificate from the manufacturer.
Which grade of steel bar is best for a house?
Grade 60 deformed bars are the standard choice for houses in Pakistan. Use Grade 40 only for light work and only where your engineer allows it.
How can I check if steel bars are genuine?
Check the rolled-in marks, weigh a few bars against D² ÷ 162 kg per metre, ask for the mill test certificate and buy from the manufacturer or an authorised dealer.
Is light rust on steel bars a problem?
A thin, tight layer of light surface rust is normal and does not weaken the bar. Loose, flaking rust or deep pits are a reason to reject the bars.
