Why Substandard Steel Is Dangerous
Steel bars hold concrete structures together, especially in earthquakes. If the bars are weaker, lighter or more brittle than specified, the building is weaker than designed. Moreover, once concrete is poured, the problem is hidden and very expensive to fix.
Common Tricks to Watch For
- Underweight bars: bars rolled thinner than their nominal size, sold as full size.
- Wrong grade: Grade 40 or ungraded bars sold as Grade 60.
- No-name bars: bars with no manufacturer marks, so nobody is accountable.
- Fake paperwork: certificates that do not match the bars or the batch.
- Re-rolled scrap: bars rolled from poorly controlled scrap, which may crack when bent.

What to Do If You Suspect Fake Steel
First, stop using the batch and keep it separate. Next, photograph the bars and markings, weigh samples, and inform the supplier in writing. If needed, get lab tests done before deciding. Above all, never let doubtful bars go into columns or beams.
